I am a New Delhi, India based professional photographer specialising in newborn, children, maternity, family and kids photography. My first connection to children photography has always been a nostalgic one – there is such a bit of magic in knowing that images that I am creating for someone’s family becomes an important timeline piece for their history. As a father of a 9 year old boy, I’m am constantly inspired by his curiosity, inquisitive nature, and boundless energy as he explore the world around him. Many of these moments, I capture through my photography for my family and friends to enjoy as he grow’s and matures. You can see a few of his pictures in my project called Journey of Joy. I have spent 15 years overseas and have travelled extensively. During this period I have had the honour of training under some of the best photographers in the US and UK. In short, I love to photograph babies and children. I shoot both on-location and do studio photography. My photo studio in Delhi is located in Defence Colony, South Delhi.
The twinkle of the eye, the sweetness of the smile, the chubbiness of the cheek and the mischief in the expression… these are the things that give you more pleasure than anything because they define your little baby’s personality. As they grow, they learn and every new thing that they learn is a precious gift to you; after all nothing can instill more pride and joy in you than the first steps your baby takes! Your baby will change so much during that first year. In what seems like the blink of an eye, a tiny helpless bundle is transformed into an active and inquisitive toddler. Kids photography sessions are a wonderful way to capture your child’s first milestones and blossoming personality. From quirky smiles and giggles to the excitement of sitting, crawling, and … walking!! Cherish the moment…because life has no rewind button.

Today, with an abundance of photographers specialising children’s images, Shira and Amit are even more intent on identifying the spark of individuality in each person that will separate the finished portrait from the typical and trendy. Our team strives to make our children photography sessions relaxed and enjoyable, while capturing a variety of posed and candid portraits. Infants are encouraged to move around, play, and have fun!
The result is portraiture that makes a clear statement about the personality and essence of the infant. Our children photography portraits avoid gimmicks and special effects in favour of something far more satisfying: dynamic expression and composition sprinkled with delicate simplicity. With an eye for perfect moments and unique perspectives, we create infant portraits that are beautiful, intimate, and emotional.
Our style of photography is relaxed and very informal and our team understands that when working with infants and children it is very important to be flexible, so we are happy to work within your routine as much as possible. We don’t place any time limits on a kids photography session – the average session involving children can take 2 to 6 hours.
Kids Photography - The Journey
I remembered back to my own childhood – there was a framed picture of my sibling and I on the wall, I remember looking at it thinking, “here I am, I belong here”.
For me, that photo was an important validation of who I was and that I was celebrated and loved. It helped my self esteem. I think of this when I photograph children with their families. I believe it is such a positive message you can give your children – photos of you together and of them on their own. I believe it’s a visual affirmation, on the wall where they see it everyday, that they are loved and celebrated by you.
This belief in the value of my work gives my work meaning, depth and I photograph from a place of love and intention that children will benefit from the images I create for them throughout their lives. I know many of these pictures will become (and have become) an iconic part of their family history.
What is the perfect age for newborn / baby photography?
This question is often put forth and discussed not just among photographers but parents, paediatricians, and doctors alike. While in the past it was as late as 6 weeks, today newborns seem to have their photograph taken the minute they exit the hospital. Another important point to ponder is at which age is a newborn a newborn? Most agree on the age being 6weeks while some go to 3 months. However for a photographer who works in this specific niche, it is within or at most till the first 14 days. There are, however, two extremely important factors which are used to determine the ‘right’ time to photograph a newborn. These are: Age and weight
As mentioned above, while the perfect age for newborn baby photography is 7-14 days sometimes the weight needs to be taken into consideration before scheduling a photo shoot. If a child is below 2 kilograms in weight, it is advisable to wait for the baby to gain a little weight. The baby should weigh at 2.75 to 3 kilograms. For some newborns, this is rather likely to indicate a photo shoot after 10-12 days. Usually, newborn twins are born premature, and often are advised by doctors not to leave their home until they become a few weeks older. Hence, it is a common practise to have the photo shoot of newborns happen after they are 4 weeks old. Often they reach their ideal birth weight when they are a few weeks (4-5 weeks) old. Though, sometimes newborn twins can be photographed at as early an age as 10 days if they are born at their actual due date- meaning that they are full term and are have a birth weight of 3.2 kilograms. The earliest is 3 days.
Why early pictures of newborns is the perfect age for newborn photography
Within the early first few days of their life, newborn babies still are ‘womb’ like and enjoy staying curled up and love to keep warm. It is possible to achieve good foetal style positions and experience their newness. Newborn babies often have peely skin, as well as their umbilical cord, is yet to fall off or be removed and are also in a semi-dreamlike state which is so often quite exquisite. Upon getting older, they become even more alert and begin to stretch out, are not quite that bendy or even sleepy which makes cute baby poses a challenging task. However, the difficulty of this task cannot be quantified as each newborn is different.
Newborn / Baby Photography Safety Considerations
Babies are adorable with their soft almost satin like skin, their big round tiny bellies. Even the flaky fingers and tiny toes. Each and every square centimetre of a newborn child is absolute perfection. And everyone especially the baby’s parents know this which is why they hire professional photographers to capture their child’s perfection in that stage that is the brand new child’s life. The photographers in this profession consider it an honour that they have been chosen to capture a miracle with their cameras. The photographers who work in this specialised niche of newborn photography truly have one of the best jobs in the entire planet as they get to spend hours and hours of time posing, snuggling and pouring love in newborn babies which often are just a very few days or weeks old. Newborn children photographers capture such a fleeting time with their camera. They provide parents with memories that they will treasure till the end of their days. The photo shoot itself also becomes a fond memory, revisited each time they view the photographs of their precious newborns, and hence an important job which the photographer must complete is creating a safe and loving environment.
One of the major safety considerations for newborn photography is the need to respect the person you are capturing through the lens of your camera. A large part of the photographer’s job is ensuring that people have the right look or the right pose so that the photograph turns out all right and so that the clients are satisfied. This means fixing the positions, flyaway hairs and poses in short. While the general rule is to always ask before moving the clients around, this cannot be done with newborn children as while it is impossible to get any form of permission or forbid, their parents often implicitly provide it by trusting us with their child. This however does not exempt the newborn from the basic respect shown to all other clients
However, one cannot always ask the mother and father every time the photographer each time a placement needs to be made by tilting the head of the child, or repositioning the feet of the child. However, constant communication is also a very important responsibility of the photographer. The photographer should explain to the client what to expect from a newborn child’s photography session. The beginning pose, which pose it will be transitioning to, any safety considerations for newborn photography caused by these, etc. Through this, the professional communicates that he respects the newborn and has his best interests at heart and understands his responsibility.
Children, they are best subjects to ever pose in front of a camera! They are always beautiful and exude innocence that captures the heart. But how do we get the best photograph of your little angel? Simply, by going down on their level. Kid’s photography is an art form, as well as a privilege – a privilege to freeze time, and save it for posterity.
Little Cherub Kisses Babies are hardest to picture. In their innocence, they keep on moving and exploring the world around them. With this, it would be best to give them something to hold on to or something to play with. A rattle, a musical mobile hanging above their crib, or a red balloon! Going down on their level, by lying beside them on a baby rug, or towel will allow you to get their most natural of poses. Capture the moment in time by taking multiple photographs and choosing the best. Soothing music and taking care of not using glaring lights will ensure a beautiful baby portrait that you will cherish close to your heart. Toddlers are always on the move. Preparing a bright and playful environment that will feed the fancy of the child, long enough to take a picture. Everything that a child does at this stage in his life is memorable. A little boy tracing the surface of a rock with his fingers and staring with awe; or a little girl giggling as she is pulling petals from a flower. Be at eye level with them so you can see the wonder that they are seeing.
School age Kids are easier to photograph. They have longer attention spans and can follow directives. Capture them exuding innocence and exploring the beauty around them. A child is only a child once, and it is every parent’s dream to freeze the moment for all time.
Just A Tip Kids – whether babies, toddlers, or school aged love fun. This is how they acquire knowledge and enjoy life. Capitalizing on this natural aspect of a child is very helpful as it would both give you the opportunity to capture Kids in their natural beings. ’Going down on their level’ does not only mean meeting them at eye level but more about tapping on your own inner child to understand. Enjoy as they enjoy. Laugh with them as they laugh. Ask yourself what makes a child smile? Cotton candy, bright flowers, and of course, Mommy! Having a familiar environment will help you calm and ease the child. Remember that a relaxed child would look better on a photograph than a terrified one.
Need Help? You’ve tried to do it on your own; but still can’t get it right. Enlist the help of a professional who had worked with children, their own included. There are photography studios around Delhi who specialises in kid’s photography. They incorporate toys and backgrounds that Kids would love! Besides, this is a special memory that you would like to keep; it would be best to leave it to the hands of an expert. Amit Chhabra, a photographer in Delhi specialises in this area. As a father, he takes pride in recording his son’s memories through beautiful photographs and he can do the same for you. With years of experience, he is the best choice. All kids portfolio photography sessions are shot on in-studio or location with natural light. While it is important to choose a time of the day that your child is happiest, keep in mind that for an outdoor session, early morning (just after sunrise) or late afternoon (2 hours before sunset) light is ideal.
Clothing My point of view on kids portfolio photography clothing has changed considerably since I started shooting full time, and from mostly black and white to predominantly colour portraits. While I still believe a kids portfolio should be as timeless as possible, my opinion on clean lines and solid colours is out the door. I want to see colour, patterns, and style. Fun and trendy is now the route I am aiming for.

Kids Photography – Fashion
The most important thing to remember is that you can wear all the greatest clothes and all the greatest shoes, but you’ve got to have a good spirit on the inside. That’s what’s really going to make you look like you’re ready to rock the world.
Fashion is not necessarily about labels. It’s not about brands. It’s about something else that comes from within you.
I continue to believe that if children are given the necessary tools to succeed, they will succeed beyond their wildest dreams!
